Encyclopedia Of Life

A Nova documentary about Ed Wilson’s work in the areas of ants and sociobiology mentioned a website called the Encyclopedia of Life. This website is the brainchild of Ed Wilson and intrigued me. I have always loved the being in the outdoors as well as knowing about it and what lives in it. This website was built to be a complete encyclopedia of every living species on earth, forever growing until the very last species has been discovered and documented.

While that in itself is incredibly impressive, it is not what initially intrigued me about the site.

Communism is Alive

A great book.  You should read it...
I recently finished a book called The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific by J. Maarten Troost. Contrary to the title, there is very little about cannibals, and less about sex. It is, however, a fascinating book about living in the equatorial island nation of Kiribati. The book is also the only reference I have found to a communist society that actually lives and sustains itself.

According to Wikipedia:

Pure communism in the Marxian sense refers to a classless, stateless and oppression-free society where decisions on what to produce and what policies to pursue are made democratically, allowing every member of society to participate in the decision-making process in both the political and economic spheres of life.

The major reason this system has never been reached in a large scale is that people seem to naturally oppress others so that they can have more things and more power.

Art in the Background

The background color, image, or pattern can make or break a website. Recently I found an amazing artist who has created amazingly elegant and intricate background images for websites. Evan Eckard, a print and web designer based in Northern California, created a website call DinPattern where his background patterns are featured and available for download. The website also has a great preview function allowing a full view of every pattern available.
